As normal, a lot of Husker fans have read this blog and are making arguments against what I have written about the CU vs. NU game. To be fair, that's the point of arguing and it's why I love my job. However, some people are saying that I'm being wishy-washy on some things which bothers me. So, I'll state some things again:
1. The Devaney Center, when full, is a tough place to play. Too bad that's it's only full for Creighton and Kansas. Thus, Husker fans don't really like basketball. They like to root against teams that come into their building. They appear to get more satisfaction out of seeing the opponent lose then to see their own team win. Again, the crowd was loudest in the 1st half for the football team and attendance is weak on most nights in Lincoln.
2. Playing on the road at a rival's is good for CU to develop their young players. It was good to play at Little Rock and good to play at Nebraska. They played like crap and lost by a total of 4 points. That shows the ceiling of where the team could be in February. They are 3-2 but very easily could be 5-0. They have learn to play 40 minutes before that can happen however. I never said the Devaney Center is an easy place to play when full. I simply stated the facts that the fans don't show up consistently and aren't really into basketball.
3. The Creighton-Nebraska game is great for the state and should be played twice a year. It doesn't stand for anything EXCEPT pride and unofficial title of who was better on that given day. Is Western Kentucky better than Louisville? Not over the whole year but yesterday they were. It's for bragging rights. Dana Altman understands this. Doc Sadler does too but he chooses to lie about his true feelings publicly in order to make Nebraska appear to be looking down on little Jesuit school in Omaha. It's insulting and just not true. See the half court dance he did while leading the band on Saturday night.
4. P'Allen would have made a difference for sure. After watching the game again, NU did a great job of rolling to the side that Booker Woodfox was on and getting out to put a hand in his face. Book is a pick and pop kinda guy. Rarely can he create his own shot. What P does is break down defenses. Thus, he forces teams to get out of position on D, opening up shots for Booker. Without P, Book can be shut down - which is what happened on Saturday. 2 point game - P'Allen Stinnet would have added a lot to attack in the 2nd half when CU was really struggling to find shots.
Just wanted clarify a few points. Thanks.

It stands to reason that the arena would be the loudest when the football team was introduced...most of the Jays fans were cheering for them along with Husker fans. That shows right there that this will never be as big of a rivalry as you want it to be. There's too much crossover.
As for playing without P...Sure he would have made a difference, we just don't know if it would have been positive or negative. It didn't help in Little Rock. Besides, if he would have played, that would have taken away time for Korver, Herriman & Millard...each of whom played well and knocked down shots.
Your hatred for NU baskeball & Doc Sadler clouds your thinking and you will never be able to look at them objectively. It's kind of sad that you are that childish.
Doc is 2-1 against Altman & it must pain you to think that Doc may actually be a good coach and have success at NU. Just because he doesn't worship Altman & CU's past success, doesn't mean he looks down on CU or their program. Get real.
No, Western Kentucky is not better than Louisville which was the same argument I used last year when Mercer beat USC to demonstrate that Creighton was better than Nebraska for ONE NIGHT. And despite the fact that our records were nearly the same, we beat 6 teams that got into the NCAA tournament, and played in a conference that got many more than the 1 that the Mo Valley put into the NCAA tournament, you still wouldn't concede that NU was better. It seems that you've suddenly changed your position around 180 degrees based completely on the outcome of this year's game. So, AS NORMAL, you have completely painted yourself into a corner with your own narrow minded dispositions.
"They appear to get more satisfaction out of seeing the opponent lose then to see their own team win." Please support this; not quite sure what tool you're using to measure this.
There is no reason for NU to play the game twice per year. It benefits CU win or lose, but is a loaded game for Nebraska. If you want to play some BCS confernce games then schedule Arizona State or Oregon State like we did so that your marquee win, like last year, doesn't end up being the team from Lincoln which you professed to be better than.
Before I even left the Devaney, I told my dad that you were formulating how to verse the Stinnett excuse as we spoke. "He would have easily scored 8 points" were you exact words in the post game. Since were speaking metaphorically, I'd say that NU's aggressiveness would have caused thugAllen to lose his cool to the point of two technical fouls via his trademark whining when a defense plays him close and doesn't allow him space to dance around, shuffle his feet, and palm the ball. Stick the game itself and not the "yeah but's" including your grasping at straws for the phantom foul you saw on the half court shot at the end of the game.
By the way, saying "we played like crap in those games and still only lost by a total of four points" isn't taken into consideration in the, remote, chance Creighton is a bubble team at the end of the year; because they sure not playing like the favorites to win a conference, even if it is the inconsequential Missouri Valley.
"Doc Sadler does too but he chooses to lie about his true feelings publicly in order to make Nebraska appear to be looking down on little Jesuit school in Omaha."
Come on Matt, you claim to know the "true feelings" of Doc Sadler? That statement just makes me believe Travis more that you just have a hard on for Nebraska and/or it's coach.
That's like saying "Matt lied" when he said no Manning would ever win a Super Bowl.
Seeing an opponent like KU lose to NU is part of being happy that your team has won. (The underdog mentality)
Yes I am in the minority but I own season tickets for this year and went to all the games last year. So maybe I take your digs against NU to heart.
Fans are fickle and not just in Nebraska. I went to UNL in the early to mid 90s.
The 92-93 and 93-94 squads that NU had were great teams. (Piatkowski, Boone, Badget, Stickland etc..)
The whole bottom section of the Devaney was reserved for students as General Admission seating. This meant a line would form 2-3 hours before tip off.
The atmosphere was amazing. To this day the KU vs NU game in 93 is one of my all time favorite sporting events. NU won on national TV and the students passed Dicky V through the stands after the game.
Yes a football school is capable of supporting a basket ball team.
I like Doc. He is bringing back the excitement, he's landed some decent talent which has attracted a small but loyal fan base.
As for you it's obvious you don't care for the guy. Fair enough. The Slingblade comment is lame but your allowed your oppinion.
I will end my long and pointless rambling with this question: I get the impression from your blog and post game show Saturday you view NU as an insignifficant and worthless team ("...they'll be lucky to win 4 games in the Big 12").
Why talk about them in the first place?
You still haven't back up your claim that "He is disrespectful, as are his players and that's why last night hurts to lose to a bunch like that." How have NU players been disrespectful?
Matt,
I've never really heard you address the issue of Creighton's attendance pre-Qwest. Let me summarize some averages:
94-95: 4,820 (though 8,883 showed up when #14 Iowa State came to town)
95-96: 4,625 (though 9,060 showed up when NU came to town)
96-97: 4,853 (though 9,023 showed up when SW Missouri State came to town)
97-98: 4,940 (though 8,034 showed up when NU came to town)
98-99: 5,193 (though 8,418 showed up when #18 Okie State came to town)
99-00: 6,494 (though 9,000 plus showed when #23 Iowa and NU came to town)
00-01: 6,561 (no significant jumps)
01-02: 6,613 (no significant jumps)
02-03: 8,245 (no significant jumps)
So my question is this, looking at Creighton's attendance figures pre-Qwest for these years (which, by the way, were all less than NU's attendance figures those years), were Creighton fans not as knowledgeable as NU's fans those years? Did they just cheer for the other team to lose? And if so, what has suddenly made them more knowledgeable fans? Why did attendance suddenly skyrocket when they moved to the Qwest though the last 5 teams who played at the Civic went to the NCAA tournament yet Devaney's attendance was higher?
Please provide some thoughts since attendance equals basketball knowledge. Please provide some thoughts since Creighton's attendance has only been better than NU's attendance since they moved to the Qwest yet you always provide little jabs at NU's attendance. I'll be waiting.
Matt,
What is the overall record b/w Creighton and Nebraska? I know you will come back and say before this week Creighton won 8 of the last 9 regular season games, well that was against Collier. Doc is 2-1, but do we have to throw that out, because 2 games were in Lincoln? You make the rules, so please tell us. Spin it however you want, Doc once again outcoached Dana, as Dana was left with no timeouts at the end, his player made an inexcusable lane violation on a free throw late in the game and Creighton had 24 turnovers. These are typical characteristics of an undisciplined team which is usually a direct result of coaching.
To be fair to Matt, I think he just started this "to be fair" blog because of heat from JBG on his "perceived" Husker basketball hateness, but that's just "the word on the street", and shouldn't be taken for any more fact than Matt's opinions.
Are you F'ing kidding me? My work tells me nothing...ever.
Still waiting Matt. For someone that likes to knock on NU's attendance yet praise Creighton's, I really want to know how you reconcile the two fanbase's attendance figures pre-Qwest. Further, whether that means Creighton didn't have any fans that really liked basketball.
You still haven't back up your claim that "He is disrespectful, as are his players and that's why last night hurts to lose to a bunch like that." How have NU players been disrespectful?
Sorry, TW & beav. You'll never get an answer out of ole Matty. He just spouts off and doesn't have anything to back up what he says. To be honest, it's pretty sad.
Creighton fans know so much more about basketball since they started having higher attendance figures over the last five years. Matt is this the rationality you used when determining the knowledge of a fanbase? 1620 has a guy that does play by play nationally for college football, I guess that means he has way more knowledge than you when it comes to football.
Still waiting Matt. What are your thoughts on my above post regarding Creighton's measley attendance averages pre-Qwest?
"Are you F'ing kidding me? My work tells me nothing...ever."
You said on the air about 45 days ago that your bosses don't like you focusing on negative Nebraska attention.
I just figured they didn't want to s*it where they ate.
Maybe all the listeners were smoking crack again.
You guys - Matt is simply saying what he's saying to stir up Nebraska fans. Now that Nebraska has beat Creighton, he's got nothing left to discuss, so he's resorting to using his imagination.
He knows he'll get a reaction if he says negative stuff about Nebraska, plain and simple.
Nebraska beat Creighton. There shouldn't be anything left to talk about between these two teams until they meet again...next year.
I think you were hearing things....I never said my bosses talked to me about being too negative....I've never had a single conversation about my opinion of Nebraska basketball with anyone I work for.
Matt,
Your failure to answer direct questions, particularly those here from TW, serve as proof that your immature and unsubstantiated pot shots at Nebraska, their fans, and players and coaches are nothing more than words meant to incite by a narrow minded antagonist.
The childish way you reacted to Creighton's loss to Nebraska through addressing a smattering of issues totally disconnected from the actual game reminds me of a child who has been bested and resorts to saying "so, my dad could beat up your dad."
One more thing, you should swing by the Qwest over your lunch break to make sure that the martini bars are adequately equipped for the Mississippi Valley State mixer tonight.
And . . . still waiting.
I love the insults about martinis - do you think that actually hurts me? My favorite drink is a martini. I wear blue sweaters. I do drive a RX-8. People, if you are so insecure that you think people who are different than you are gay or weird or scary - I feel really bad for you. It sucks to hate people because they make you feel worse about yourself.
Oh, I'm not getting into arguements about attendance for games that I was in college for. Not worth it...see the 14,000 tonight for a game against MVST. That's all i need say.
"My favorite drink is a martini. I wear blue sweaters. I do drive a RX-8. People, if you are so insecure that you think people who are different than you are gay or weird or scary - I feel really bad for you. It sucks to hate people because they make you feel worse about yourself."
Martinis, blue sweaters, RX-8s, and popped collars do not make you gay, Matthew. However, they do make you a douche bag.
Quite the COP-OUT!!! Shall we all agree then that you also won't discuss Creighton's basketball performance pre-Qwest also? As Mr. Trofholz said, you're ability to actually address direct questions is comical. You have quite the easy job: Spit out a rant, and run like hell when they call you out on it.
Back to the attendance, how can you give props to Creighton's attendance without knowing the back-history. If all 14,000 are "true fans", where were they only five years ago, when Creighton actually had a better team? Please answer Matt.
If you're going to post a blog, at least have the self-respect as a sports talk host to address those points which fly in the face of your arguments.
Your persecution complex aside, I have no problem giving props to Creighton University for drawing 16k. But just be honest about it. At most (and I am being generous) less than 10k are there to see basketball.
Oh yea, since you loved to use it so much last year, I will once again remind you:
Scoreboard.
Doc - 2
Dana - 1
nobody said anything about creighton fans being "gay". seriously, i think matt has trouble with understanding the content of some posts. people talk about creighton fans being geeks in khaki pants, wearing sweatervests, drinking girly drinks, showing up late, leaving early, talking on cell phones during the game, craning their necks to see who is sitting around them and not being true fans of the team but just showing up to watch creighton basketball since it is the "thing to do". i have never heard anyone hint that any of this makes creighton fans "gay".
nobody cares if anyone is gay, nobody is being small minded. i believe the ridicule towards creighton fans is based on the above description of their behaviour at the games. they don't seem like real fans if they show up late, pay a mild amount of attention to the game, stay pretty damn quiet until creighton gives them something to cheer about and are more interested in talking with the surrounding fans or on their cell phones while the game is going on.
matt, just respond to the post about attendance. quit talking about creighton playing a bad game against nebraska but managing to only lose by two. guess what? nebraska played pretty poorly themselves. good teams can play a bad game and still get the win. do you think it might be possible for a team like kansas state or illinois who are decent teams but not great to play a bad game and still beat a team like nebraska? of course it is.
face it, creighton is an okay team. they have some talent but it has not shown up yet on the court. they never test themselves against high level teams so they never get a good idea for where they need to improve. their losses end up being to very average to borderline bad teams and then they either fail to make the tournament or lose in the first round because they have no experience playing high level teams.
none of this makes creighton fans gay. it only makes them look kind of goofy when they worship a team which is average at best and never really amounts to much at the end of the year. they are fun to follow, go to some games, have a beer or two with your friends, see who is at the game, make a few calls and line up something to do after the under 8 minute timeout hits and then head for the exit as creighton hopefully wins over a below par team. what fun.
"Oh, I'm not getting into arguements about attendance for games that I was in college for..."
You can't bring yourself to comment on TW's question relating to the deviation between Creighton's current attendance versus that of the past yet your are quick to always make a comparison of the Jays record against the Huskers over the past ten years despite the fact you've only worked in Omaha since 2005??? You can't have it both ways Matthew.
Furthermore, I didn't reference martinis in the capacity of anyone's sexual orientation in my previous post, rather, to demonstrate that if history is any indication, where booze flows, so too will the Jay's "fans" follow. That, TW, is the answer you were driving for but will never get from Matt.
Matt,
You are quite the laughing stock of local sports talk radio. Nebraska will win 4 games at best in the Big 12? Apparently you have only watched them play once, in which it was by far their worst performance of the year and they still beat Creighton and the worst half of basketball they played since Creighton last year. This team is defense oriented and that is going to always be there regardless of the offense. You are forgetting that we will have Chapman 6'8" and hopefully Diaz ready to go by Big 12 play. Nebraska had a very poor performance offensively, but once again shut down the other team offensively and forced 24 turnovers. This was not anything different than they have been doing defensively thus far on the year, so I wouldn't say it was a fluke. Doc has already proven that he is a very good gameplanner and plays to his teams strength and exposes another teams weakness, which I expect to continue the rest of the year.
Matt,
What evidence or examples can you cite that prove that Nebraska PLAYERS are "disrespectful".
Last I looked, they do well in class, no arrests or citations, and are generally good people.
Shame on you for denegrating these young men.
Matt is just p**sed that the gravy train is over. Gone are the days Creighton's basketball program is far beyond Nebraska's. Gone are the days of complacency that rattled the Collier era. Matt and other informed bluejay fans are scared be the recruiting class Doc is bringing in. The future of Nebraska basketball will be a athletic, skilled basketball team with decent size.
Did some guy with a sesame street character for an icon just call me a loser? Wow - that is seriously powerful stupid
Matt,
Count Istvan didn't ask you a question; please address the several questions posed to you prior to his post rather than trying to feebly bait anyone into juvenile argument over an icon.
Here is another question for you not to answer: How can you castigate Nebraska fans as "cheering for the other team to lose" when on your own account per your bio on the Big Sports 590 website, your favorite all time sports moment was the collapse of the Yankees in 2004?? Please understand what I just did there: I backed my contentions with some evidence; please do the same....
2004 - Greatest Sports Comeback of all time- THE RED SOX WON over the Yankees. Are you seriously questioning my fandom as a Red Sox fan? See my bio picture - Game 4 picture from Denver 2007 World Series.
For the last time...There were 13,000 people at the Qwest Center last night for Miss. Valley St. Are you calling all of the bandwagon? I don't care about the attendance at the Civic. Prior to my arrival in 2004, why people went to games is of ZERO interest to me. Why they go now - they love their team and love going to the games. Period.
No, I'm not questioning your fandom, I'm calling you ignorant and a hypocrite.
You said people who support Nebraska basketball are only their to cheer to see the other team lose, but when you cheer to see the Yankees lose, this makes you a Red Sox "fan". What's the difference?????
No, neither myself TW, or anyone in this blog have referred to Creighton's attendance as bandwagon. "Bandwagon" would have been a hefty increase in attendance for Jays games during their last 5 years at the Civic when they made the NCAA tournament each year; this did not happen. However, for reasons you won't admit, numbers nearly doubled when they moved to a place where the beer flows like wine, AND put a worse product on the floor.
You're not going to discuss Jays basketball prior to you getting here in 2004?? Then we should be done hearing you blathering about Altman's record against Nebraska for the past 10 years right?? Ideally yes, but you've made a career out of ignoring facts for the betterment of the spin you put on everything, so I doubt this will be the case.
Period.
In other words, don't let facts and history get in the way of my juvenile arguments.
Dear Matt
You suck at your job. TW owns you and should take over your show.
PS - Sweet Augusta pic...popped-collared dork.
Please lick,
Deez Nutz
Here's why it should be of some importance Matt.
You bring up Nebraska's jump in attendance and use past games to rant that (1) Husker fans are bandwagon fans, (2) Husker fans don't like basketball, and (3) Husker fans don't know basketball. For your arguments, you feel you can cite past attendance.
Well, we use past years attendance for Creighton when they were extrememly successful to highlight our points. You say they aren't all bandwagon. Fair enough, they aren't. But until you give me one good reason why attendance jumped in the "thousands" when they moved to the Qwest, even though there's a worse product on the floor, then my inclination is to assume that a lot of people are there because it's a big even town.
If you're going to call Husker fans bandwagon, that they don't like the team, and they don't know basketball by using "a jump in attendance", then we shall do the same.
Matt, you are an amazing judge of one's character and intentions. I got to give you a lot of credit for calling Doc Slingblade and pointing out that he tries to go out of his way to dis Creighton. You're about as mature as P', so we might as well start calling you P'rrault.
I don't think I'm listening anymore.
Creighton fans hate baseball.
Matt
Address your comment where you called out Nebraska basketball players as being disrespectful.
If this keeps up, I'm going to rename this blog "the Matt Sea Scrolls".
Funny stuff guys.
Funny stuff? What's funny is your lack of any substantive response. Isn't sports your job? You'd think you'd have something better I guess.
Jays Fans,
Since your patriarch, Matt Perrault, won't address any of the direct questions that he has been pinpointed with, perhaps some of you could shed some light on our queries???
I mean after all, you guys are usually, at least, good for a well thought out and calculated "Husker fan's need to shut the f*** up!!"
Enlighten me.
Trof...does it tell you anything that not one person here defends this douche? Even Creighton fans hate him. What a well respected journalist...HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
For starters, I'm not a journalist. Never wanted to be, never will be. If you've listened to the show, you'd know that.
2nd, What exactly am I being asked to explain? Why 16k people go to a basketball game? Hold on while I ask them each why...please. Nice arguement. As I stated, I don't care why they went to games at the Civic...they go now.
Lastly, Do you realize you are basically arguing with yourselves on here? Sure, it's my blog so I read this but Bluejay fans know that if they want to talk to me redirectly - they email me questions.
Matt,
We know your intentions and that you have no rational stance or basis to any of your arguments. You want to use history for your basis when its in your favor, but not when it goes against you. You are a Creighton jersey chaser, and that will never change which is fine. I just know it really eats at you to see not only Nebraska beat Creighton, and even though you won't admit appears that it will continue to do so. Nebraska has much better recruits coming in the next year and will just continue to get better which has you and the majority of Bluejay fans quite worried. The Collier years are over, and those were I believe he accounted for 1 win and 8 losses in our series which we still lead around 25-18.
Matt,
You're like a desperate gambler who refuses to pay his debts. You got upset, took a chance in spouting off material you couldn't back, and now you're just hoping for time decay all of us in the hopes that we'll give up on trying to "collect" answers to very viable questions as you continue to refuse to answer or simply say "I don't care."
Saturdays game against St. Josephs can't get here fast enough for you so that you can post another fruitless blog in the hopes that this one will be forgotten.
