Great Coverage By Equal?

How come the Omaha World Herald has run several stories this summer about Nebraska Basketball and yet, nothing about the Jays? Was I right when I predicted that the OWH will look to push NU basketball in Omaha in order to score points with Doc Sadler and Co. as they look to improve? Or is it just Lee Barfknecht's desire for NU BB to relevant? Or maybe it's the OWH goal to make a run at the LJS's coverage of everything red?

Take your pick- I do find it interesting that Omaha's team gets less attention in the down months but the team that has NEVER won an NCAA tournament game gets several stories written about them.....How about a preview of how the Jays will do to handle the coming hype that will be around the team? How about national writers predicting a big year? How about how the team will gel this year with the new faces?

I guess our largest paper just doesn't think CU is that important right now......

That's because they aren't.

Nebraska had the Sallie debacle...that had a lot of press. Nebraska had the Doc Sadler Classic which is turning into a pretty big event...that got a lot of press. And now, Doc Sadler got a 4-star PF/C...that will continue to get a lot of press.

Face it, Creighton only has 2 NCAA Tourney wins. That's better than Nebraska, but it's nothing to write home about. Nebraska is building and the next few years could be fun rides for Nebraska.

If, more like when, Nebraska Basketball does become good, many Creighton fans are going to jump. Face it, more Creighton fans are Nebraska Football fans anyway. Many of them will easily transfer over has Big 12 basketball is just a bigger brand of basketball than the MVC.

Great attempt at spicing up the slow period, first off.

1. Why do you care? It is not as if the articles published by Lee haven't been newsworthy. OWH readers want to read those stories.

2. You do realize that a far larger percentage of OWH readers are NU fans than Creighton fans? The OWH is simply printing what sells. This also kind of speaks to the "Omaha's team" slogan that Creighton has been pushing. It is a marketing slogan - not the truth.

3. Your proposed Creighton stories probably haven't been published and probably won't be published until the fall because they are fluff. If the OWH ran those sort of stories about NU you'd flip out. Why is it entirely appropriate for Creighton?

4. Yes, NU has never won a tournament game. However, lets face facts - the NCAA has never issued a trophy for winning your first round game. Creighton fans love to tout that accomplishment, but it doesn't mean squat. Also, to save the Creighton fans the trouble. Sublime, Creighton has actually won 6 or 8 tourney games. However, at least two were in consolation games (essentially exhibitions in which the winner gained absolutely nothing) and another couple occurred so long ago that I am not sure that the possession clock had been introduced yet.

Um...doesn't Florida come to mind? I don't think that was an exhibition....and I don't think Billy Donovan was exactly pleased to lose to the Jays.

Matt,

What is this? Bored on your vacation? What has Creighton done that deserves an off season article yet? Did the paper ignore a Jays recruit?

If I remember correctly, the OWH did an article about summer league for the Jays when it started. So now they do this one on Nebraska.

You are really stretching here. Feel like you haven't catered to the Jays fanbase for a while?

Give me your mailing address, Matty, and I'll send you a box of tissues. The OWH is printing relevant stories that their readers want to read. As much as you or the other bluejay fans don't want to admit or recognize, there are tons more Husker fans in Omaha and the surrounding area. Now, a mojority of these fans have lost interest over the last 10 years of horrible baskeball, but the interest has returned with the hope of a successful team...thanks to Doc.

You and your little pocket of jays fans better just worry about your own team and hope that they don't fold under the increased expectations like the baseball team did.

Trav's been right twice in his life. This time, he's been right that you have a hard on for Sadler and/or NU basketball

Why would you read the OWH anyway?

Big XII basketball versus missouri valley jankball. the choice is very clear, nebraska is an improving team playing in a much better conference and (as weak as their schedule was last season) still playing better competition each season. doc will be coaching nebraska to new heights before moving on to a bigger and better job. dana will be stuck in omaha, unable to handle the job at arkansas and fired by kansas state, unable to ever prove himself on the stage of real college basketball at the highest level.

If the Valley fans want to shake their magic 8 ball and proclaim the Valley has being equal to or greater than the Big 12 than it is "decidedly so". We just reserve the right to laugh at them.

Big 12 just set a record for drafted NBA players a month ago. How many did the Valley get again?

Unfortunately the OWH is the only newspaper in Omaha and for most, the Huskers are the sports team in Nebraska.

It's the man catering to the man while the little guy gets shunned once again.

It's unfortunate, but the story of life.
