Tom Shatel came on the show this week and said that Nebraska had a good chance to host an NIT game. From the people I talked to and the projections had NU as a low seed, "on the bubble" if you would. That obviously wasn't the case and now Nebraska will host a game against Charlotte out of the A-10 as a 3 seed. To me - way too high but the NCAA is in love with the power conferences in the NCAA - so why should the NIT be any different. 8 Teams from the Big 12 in the post season...9 from the Big East.
Nebraska gets a tougher first game than Creighton does but they get an easier 2nd round game than CU if they advance. Ole Miss out of the SEC is a up and coming team but they wanted to be in the NCAA's...not the NIT. The SEC as a whole was very down this year (see Georgia winning the conference tourney after having 4 wins all year) and Ole Miss will be beatable if NU gets past Charlotte (A-10 team which beat UMass to send them into the NIT as a 2 seed - I'm not a fan of them!).
Creighton gets an easier first round game as they get to see Rhode Island - a team that is on a downward spiral out of the A-10. To be honest, I hate URI. I'm a UMass kid...we hate the Rams! At one point, URI was headed to the NCAA's but they fell apart down the stretch due to poor play and injuries. If the Jays get past the Rams, they get to go to....FLORIDA! Defending National Champions!! Not an easy match up at all for Dana Altman's club! It would be interesting to see how the people in Gainsville would view an NIT match up with CU since they beat them in the NCAA's the last time they met.
However, this is great for the Jays and Nebraska. They both get home games against teams that probably wouldn't ever come to the state and then they get to go on the road to face BCS schools out of the SEC. To get to New York, Nebraska will have to face an ANGRY VTech team in Blacksburg. For the Jays, it's maybe a rematch with the boys from CARBONDALE! or a trip to Tempe. Never easy to win on the road, especially in the postseason. We can pull for upsets but 3 seeds normally don't get to play 7 seeds.
NIT Game on...let's see how the team's do....I think they both are out in Round 2.

I would like to also mention that .............BIG 12 = 6 NCAA bids............mvc = 1 bid
Nebraska should be an NCAA team. Get rid of these automatic bids. These mid major leagues should not get automatic bids. No one with a straight face can honestly say that Nebraska is not one of the top 64 teams.
On a similar note, I am glad that the selection committee did not take into consideration any of this RPI business. This season proved exactly how retarded the RPI ratings are.
Ok Bob Knight
you get some great info matt.
NU would roll CU right now and you know it. Sucks doesnt it??? Keep hating.
Matt, you should denounce and repudiate any disparaging remarks you made about Doc Sadler this season. Furthermore, you should admit the great coaching job Doc Sadler did the last 8 games.
yep, Doc Sadler is the best coach in nebraska.
Think if he had the Qwest handed to him.
Mmmmmmm, defense.
I'm a die-hard husker hoops fan, always have been and always will be, but you guys gotta be real. Nebraska doesn't deserve to be an NCAA team, beav. We lost some games to some BAD teams and no matter how close we came to beating texas or kansas or baylor etc., we didnt. I wish we were in the NCAA tourney so Doc could get us our first win there, but the truth is we don't belong after the kinda season we had. And as pissed as I may get at Matt during bball season sometimes cause of the creighton/mvc favoritism, I will say he has done a good job of talking NU and Doc up this last part of the season.
Delusional as always. Get rid of the autobids? If that's the case, why not just get rid of everyone except the power 6 conferences! If that were to happen, you would actually have to play quality BCS opponents in the non-conference and you still would never make a tournament.
Jeez, you guys are a joke. I am willing to say that Nebraska a good year and Doc really got your guys peaking at the right time, but you fans (and thank god I know you don't represent everyone) are a stitch (not to mention obsessed).
Explain to me why every 3rd post on both of your main message boards has something to do with Creighton? For a team/program that is supposedly so inferior (LOL), you sure seem to being them up an awful lot. A $2 Psychologist would diagnose that as INSECURITY.
74-62. Expect more of the same next year, our young guys and incoming recruiting class shames anything you have. Of course, it will be a little closer if you can ever get Sallie to pass 4th grade English. Luckily, to get into UNL, only a 5th grade English competency is needed.
I am looking forward to your usual witty rebuttals.
" For the Jays, it's maybe a trip to CARBONDALE! or Tempe."
Matt, since Creighton's a 3 seed and SIU isn't a 4, wouldn't that mean Southern would have to come to the Qwest since CU is a higher seed? I know Southern would be on the "top" of the bracket, but higher seeds get to host, period, don't they?
If you ranked the teams 1-65 Nebraska would no doubt be in there. I see what you are saying, but I love the auto bids and the way the tourney is set up now. It gives every team a chance to make it and it makes conference tournaments mean something.
Nebraska will make a return to the NCAA's soon. For now we just have to deal with an NIT bid and hope it provides us with a springboard into next season.
For the record:
I have absolutely no problem complementing and giving credit where credit is due. Nebraska had a fine year and Doc has that program heading in the right direction. I hope NU does make it to the tournament one day, it will hopefully shed some of the resident blowhards' insecurity complexes. It would be nice to actually have an intelligent conversation on here without all the "we play in the mighty Big XII!" chest thumping.
Aric,
First of all your a moron. Second of all, I'm worried about how we stack up against the other Big 12 teams every year, not Creighton. Creighton is nothing more than a little in-state mid-major team that we have to play once a year. Unfortunatly for you guys, as long as Doc Sadler is coaching here, you're going to lose more often than not to us.
You can bust on Sallie all you want. The NCAA didn't clear him the first time, big deal. He worked hard and will be in a Husker uniform next November. He earned it unlike former Creighton Bluejay Kevin Ross who could not even write or read after 4 years at the "prestigious" Creighton University. I can't wait until Sallie smashes on you tools next year.
By the way, UNMC blows the Creighton Med Center out of the friggin' water.
Yep, Creighton is just a little mid-major team that has happened to beat you 8 times out the last 10. Is counting not a prerequisite to get into your 4th tier (U.S. News, look it up) cakewalk school?
By the way, Creighton School of Law blows UNL's out of the water. Also, UNMC's MED school doesn't blow Creighton's out of the water, only the nursing program, congrats!
So ends the thought of having an intelligent conversation. It's obvious you just want to perpetuate and escalate the hate.
Like I said, thank god I know you don't represent the average Husker fan.
aric, the bluejay board was talking ad nauseum about nebraska tonight, someone dedicated a post to saying huskers suck, many posters posted our matchup with charlotte when it was announced...and other than a few ribbings of matt's predictions, on the sker board there isn't any mention of creighton's game against whoever they're playing in the nit. so gee idk who's obsessed.
love this brilliant quote from a jay: "At least we don't have to play them - I think the Jays would have been totally unmotivated in a rematch."
yaaaaaah
Hey aric, thats cool if you want to bash sallie. husker fans will take him anyday over the mouthpiece-throwing, crybaby p'allen stinnett. ive never seen a division one basketball player act like him. he thinks EVERY call against him is bogus and he thinks everytime he gets touched it's a foul. its kind of fun watching just to see how he'll explode next. But yeah, fault Sallie for doing the work, getting the grades, but only to have the NCAA say 'that's not enough, you now need to show us all your paperwork you did.' who saves all their homework?
I agree with that Celticpride. The NCAA really worked Sallie over. He will be here soon though, as a Sophomore!
Your right about Punk'Allen too, the kid is a baby.
Aric, UNMC is head and shoulders above Creighton in nearly every single category. In fact, very recently Creighton mandated board prep classes because their pass/fail rate was nationally embarrassing. I will give you that Creighton has a better law program but it's only law school. Any dumbass who can sit up right during an LSAT can get into law school.
I know for a fact that most kids have UNMC listed higher than Creighton. When they don't get accepted into UNMC's small and selective medical school they begrudingly go pay twice as much for a second rate education.
are you morons argueing over medical schools? Jesus. Grow up.
Creighton is the best basketball program in the state.
Nebraska has the best athletic department.
Stop with all of this. NU had a nice year. It was a down year for CU and the Valley. We all know this. Let the post season begin.
And yes, I'll correct that SIU deal...I was wrong about that...the only school that the Jays would face on the road would be the 1 seed
I have a question for Creighton and/or Nebraska fans. If Creighton was in the Big 12 where to do think they would finish in the standings. And if NU was in the MVC, how would they finish. Discuss...........
Thanks for reading this beav. Your view on Nebraska being in the NCAA is where out to lunch. Also I am not sure how many bids the pack 12 got when UCLA won all those titles. Perhaps they shouldn't have been in. Also last year a so called mid major went to the final four.
If you want debate Creighton and Nebraska who has gone to the NCAA more in basketball.
How about if we wish both teams the best in the NIT. I think Nebraska now has the right coach but either Creighton or UNL are NCAA teams right now.
Have a great one. Go Creighton and Go UNL.

"No one with a straight face can honestly say that Nebraska is not one of the top 64 teams."
Might be the dumbest thing I've read all day. Ill St. could say the same thing. So could Creighton...if fact, Creighton would be in the Top 40!
Just be happy that you are getting an NIT home game and just shut the hell up. Stop posting bullsh#t on here about Nebraska basketball being a great program...they are building...towards what? Probably a better job for Doc but they are long ways for being competitive in the Big 12
long ways from being competitive in the Big 12?? What are you talking about yet again???
Nebraska just went 8-6 in its last 14 games against Big 12 teams, 5-3 in its last 8 games. Of those 3 losses, one was 10 point loss to a 1 seed in a virtual road game, one was a 4 point loss on the road vs. a 2 seed, and the other was on the road against a team that was on a roll. NU beat 3 NCAA tournament teams in a 7 day span, when did Creighton last do that?
what the hell do you call competitive? quit making asinine statements that hold no water. NU went 7-5 in the Big 12 after opening with their 4 game skid. The other Big 12 teams records in that 12 game end to the regular season:
1. Texas 10-2
2. Kansas 9-3
3. Nebraska 7-5
3. Oklahoma 7-5
3. Texas A&M 7-5
6. Kansas State 6-6
6. Oklahoma State 6-6
8. Baylor 5-7
8. Texas Tech 5-7
8. Missouri 5-7
11. Iowa State 2-10
11. Colorado 2-10
gee, I sure hope one we day we can be "competitive" give me a break. Why do you continually say things that have completely no truth to them. Does it make you feel like a bigger man? Nebraska under Doc Sadler finished the Big 12 season as one of the most competitive teams in the conference and they will do so again next year and again you will be making lame statements that you and your sources who claimed we were on the NIT bubble believe to be true.
Celticpride
Game, set, match....nice job!
If you cannot see how competitive Nebraska was in the Big 12, your obviously a stubborn, bitter person who talks a big game but never backs it up.
Matt....does it burn when you talk out of your ass???
Well, after what Celticpride just said, I will never have to see the movie, "You Got Served".
I don't understand how a host of a sports show can always be so wrong. In talk radio, you should always feel as if the host has more knowledge than you. I don't feel this at all with Matt...not even close.
Screw game, set, match, Celticpride...the post bordered on game, set, STUD!!!! Well said!!
By the way Matt, occasionally, I like to listen to your show to torture myself. Couldn't help but notice that today you referenced Charlotte beating Rhode Island "bad" (your words) this year: Charlotte 75 Rhode Island 73. Bad???? Idiocy!!
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to print out Celticpride's last post and retire to a quiet bathroom. Too good!!!
Earth to Matt!!! How is Creighton in the top 40? RPI? Fugetaboudit. If RPI represented how good a basketball team was, then Illinois St, Dayton, Creighton, and UMASS would all be in the tourney. Evidently, the selection committee didn't think much about the quality of these teams. The selection committee correctly realized that Kentucky and Oregon, would had much lower RPI ratings, were better than those teams.
As far as Nebraska, I'll just refer to their record. 8-6 over their last 14 games......including wins over Kansas St., Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Missouri (2). Not to mention taking Texas to the wire in Austin and competing with KU. Could Creighton play with either of those teams? Fugetaboudit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Matt,
"A long ways from being competitive"? You truely have lost every bit of any credibility you had left. This may be one of the dumbest things I have ever read.
Matt's response will go something like this. Nebraska is uhhh terrible uhhhh Doc has them playing uhhhh better but uhhh they will never be uhhh as good as uhhh Creighton, uhhh we will be at uhhh hooters uhhh later uhhh tonight. Seriously take a weekend off from watching only mid-minor games and mix in a speech class so you will stop saying uhhh between every word.
I was just curious is the Big Show broadcasting live from Spaghetti Works this week? I wonder if they will have some happy hour specials on some pasta.
When Nebraska doesn't lose 3 times in one year to Kansas or Texas - call me wrong...until then, they aren't competitive with the teams that matter in their conference.
Reading all these posts just remind me of how off-center most of you are with basketball...that's fine though...you guys are new to this I understand.
Oh, I've watched the SEC, ACC, A-10, MVC, and Big East all in person for full seasons....I do watch a lot more than just mid major basketball...
you fooled me
For as much basketball as you apparently watch, you sure don't do a very good job at analyzing it. NU probably not in NIT? NU not competitive in the Big 12? NU not competitive with teams that matter, come on they lost 3 times to a #1 seed. But apparently you are not competitive because of that, heck 3 teams beat them. There must be hardly any competitive teams this year. Why do you have such an agenda against NU basketball? You've got an inferiority complex that most mid-major fans have.
I once saw a 26 year old creighton graduate cry after he had a minor fender bender with his car
I love it how Celticpride lays out all this statistical data to show that Nebraska is indeed competitive in the Big 12 but Matt just says we aren't so we are supposed to take his word for it.
They let anybody hold a sports talk show anymore.
By the way, Creighton's attendance is going to be way down tonight because of no alcohol sales. Look like Doc Sadler was right!
As of yesterday, NU had 6.8k in ticket sales according to the LJS. I would assume CU's will be higher, but how much more so? We shall see. I am tempted to go...if there was beer..I think I would
so according to Matt's logic Illinois State wasn't competitive in the MVC, even though they finished 2nd, they lost 3 times to Drake. = Not competitive.
And let's not get started on Creighton. They couldn't beat Drake OR Illinois State. And Illinois State blows compared to Kansas and Texas. So according to Matt's logic, Creighton is completely irrelevant in a TERRIBLE MVC this year...
you said it yourself matt. And yet they're a "lock" for a NIT home game and NU is "on the bubble."
you can't make this stuff up
I like how "Ole Miss would be a much easier 2nd round game than Florida". Isn't this the same Florida team that Ole Miss beat straight up in their only head to head matchup???? I don't know how that constitutes as a much easier matchup, but then again I haven't covered the SEC, Big East, MVC, A-10 in person for full seasons, so what do I know.
Where are your loyal fans tonight, Matt? Qwest looks a little empty for a big game.
Maybe this is a proof that Creighton games are a social event, and not a tradition.
When Creighton doesn't lose 3 times in one year to Drake or Illinois St.- call me wrong...until then, they aren't competitive with the teams that matter in their conference.
7,948
wow.
Nebraska had nearly 2,000 more people for freezing cold weeknight games Norfolk State and IPFW.
I NEVER want to hear matt bragging about creighton attendance ever again.
But guys come on it was 9pm on a weeknight, you expect them to make it out to the game! ESPECIALLY WITH NO ALCOHOL!?! what are you guys thinking jeez, get that alcohol back and it will be back up to 15k every game matt.
hey andy, they weren't competitive this year in the MVC...they came in 4th place and lost 5 times to Drake and ISU. That's not competitive - right.
As far as the attendance, you guys are selling tickets for HALF the Jays price with a much better start time with NO NCAA tournament in town and you are going out draw the Jays by a couple of thousand? Please....that's nothing to brag about...8,000 for a 9 oclock was good...sorry to burst your obession bubble but I'd worry more about winning tonight than why Jays fans went to the game...
You guys are so predictable.
No Matt, you are so predictable spinning everything to fit your agenda.
matt, that was the most predictable response ever. glad to see you will NEVER change. 8 pm is much better start time than 9 pm?? lol.
how many fans did Creighton have at the midnight bracket buster a couple years ago??? nuff said. You call out Husker fans every day for making excuses about things and you do it twice as bad.
oh btw, king of excuses, is it really true Creighton's students were PAID to go to this game??? If so, that is one of the biggest mockeries ever.
The only reason Creighton pulled under 8k was because there was no alcohol served, period. Cause I remember not so long ago when Creighton packed in 17k+ for a Bracket Buster game that took place at midnight. There is no excuse, you didn’t pull the fans because the NCAA’s no-alcohol policy made it a non-social event to ½ of Creighton’s fan base.
Funny how Matt doesn’t consider Nebraska competitive at 7th in the Big 12 but considers finishing 4th in the MVC is somehow competitive. Frankly, I would say both teams were competitive in their respective leagues this year. Then again, reality nor integrity aren’t always Matt’s forte.
As far as tonight’s game goes, there is nothing to worry about. With that said, I’m not worried about why Jays don’t show up for games without alcohol….just find it funny.
Matt just doesn't understand a lot of things. Last night's attendance showed a glaring sign: Creighton doesn't have diehard fans like he thought they did. Which is exactly what Husker fans have been telling him. They go b/c it's the place to be and alcohol. Last night is proof that 8,000 people are diehard Bluejay fans, which is no more than the diehard Husker fans that show up for every game. His argument is a complete waste of time.
Blaming a 9:00 start time. Are you SERIOUS? Look at your student section. It was a joke. Yeah I'm sure all those crazy college kids were in bed by 10:00. Give me a break. Creighton's fans = no different than Nebraska's. End of story Matt, your argument sucks. You've already started the excuse train cuz you know NU will outdraw Creighton tonight because their game is so much earlier, an hour. And add in the parking mess and the time people will be getting home won't be much earlier than CU fans last night.
Matt if the game started two hours earlier like the last Creighton NIT game against Akron did in 2006 you may have had approximately the same attendance as you did then 10,197 and there was no NCAA tourney in town. 10,000 is far less than 15,000 when beer is sold. Just admit to the facts beers sales put butts in seats at the Qwest Center.
Mattie Mattie (Disgusted exhale),
I was at the game last night, and I'm wondering how many of the mere 8,000 jays fans that were there, sober, were there when the game finally got over. It appeared like hundreds of people were filing out when it looked like the writing was on the wall with 5 minutes left. Die hard indeed!! Christ, fans who normally hang that sweet (and clever) "The Bath" banner, didn't even bother showing up for the game. Luckily "The Perch" was well represented.
And with your regard to me being new to this: Matt, I've been following college basketball since back when you were suckling your mother's teet; and I'm not talking about when you were in high school and your dad used to go out of town on business.
Congrats to NU for their 12th 20 win season in the history of their program. Nice work guys, but in 2017 if you can say you have 10 in a row, then I will listen to what you have to say. "OH BUT WAIT, WE PLAY IN THE BIG 12, NOT THE MVC." ok, i will listen to that, but NOWHERE, and i mean NOWHERE is their any credit given to CU from an NU fan for winning 8 of the last 10. How do you explain that?? Better yet, how do you even talk S when that is the case. What do you think about K State football fans talk S to you?? Let me answer for you. "WHAT A BUNCH OF DIP SH!TS, WE OWN THEM" Well the jays own you, head to head, PERIOD. You can't hide behind your conference on that one. Every post from an NU fan seems to forget about that and just focus on the difference in conference. What are you guys so mad about?? Who cares that around 5000 CU fans go to the games to drink? Does that hurt you?? I was there at the end last night and let me be honest, with 3 left, I wanted to leave. The only reason that I didn't is because I wanted to give my team an ovation at the end of the game for a good year. Who cares if fans leave?? Worry a little more about what your own team does and less about CU. Nothing that CU, Altman, or the fans do has any direct effect on NU (except for the beat downs we put on you) Are you guys really that mad that all the CU fans bought all the tourney tickets, well if you guys can't come to Omaha on a saturday for the 15th ranked team at the qwest, you are certainly not going to watch 4 games on a thursday....... Again congrats on your twenty win season, but your program right now just doesn't compare. PERIOD!!!!
wah wah wah.
A. We hold the all-time record over you. Why is it that you never hear Creighton fans acknowledge that? Oh no, they just make excuses. Well I can do the same. Two words: Barry Collier. Congrats, you dominated him. He's gone, history. Doc is 1-1 vs. Creighton. PERIOD. That's all that matters.
B. NU is proving and has proven for a couple months now that it is a totally different team than the one that played Creighton, if you can't see that you're blind. NU is a much better basketball team than Creighton right now. Any objective media member will point that out for you.
And who are you to tell NU fans what to worry about? You just wrote an essay on Nebraska basketball and their fans. Go look in the mirror, and then go watch the replay of NU drubbing a Charlotte team that just beat Rhode Island twice in a week.
welcomebackdana, writing a lot and using caps doesn't add credibility to your argument that "Nebraska's program doesn't even compare to Creightons"; especially this year. Neither does the argument that Creighton beating Nebraska head to head this year makes them a better team this year; all that means is that they were better than Nebraska on that day.
But if you must hold on to that stagnant, overplayed argument, then would it also hold true that USC's program doesn't compare to Mercer's. I mean after all despite the fact that Mercer finished third to last in a fellow pee on conference, the Atlantic Sun, and finished the year with a total of 11 sad wins, and that USC is a 6th seed in the NCAA tournament, the fact Mercer beat USC head to head this year by 15 points means that So Cal's program doesn't compare to Mercer's this year?
Hey Super Fly Jimmy Snuka, its not Monday Night Raw, and the team that happens to win the last time the teams met isn't automatically the reigning champion.
and for the 8 out of 10 thing, again, congrats. That seems to be a stat you bluejays live off of. but just remember, if Doc beats you next year which I fully expect, it will be 2 out of 3 to the lowly skers and so we can swing the stats to fit our agenda just like you. it could change REALLY fast. p.s. Charlotte > Rhode Island.
"Well the jays own you, head to head, PERIOD."
Care to tell me the all-time win/loss record in the Nebraska-Creighton series, moron?
I love how Creighton fans say we are one of the worse basketball programs ever. Maybe we are, but we own the series against you all time so what does that tell you?
HAHA, what a moron. He can't even spell. Must be that $80,000 Kreighton education.
"Well the jays own you, head to head, PERIOD."

When do we start arguing about CU/NU baseball?
Should we wait until basketball is done or start now?
Hey WelcomeBackDana, you gloss over the fact that NU plays in the big 12 while Creighton plays in the MVC. The big 12, being a major conference, was able to send 6 teams into the NCAA tournament. The mvc, being a mid major conference, was able only to send 1 team. This is with the RPI inflation that the mvc does every year.
Bill Swerski you were right when you compared a loss to Western Kentucky with a loss to Evansville. The hilltoppers are terrible. Nice call and thanks for the wonderful basketball knowledge you bring to this blog.
Hahahahaahahahahaah.
Western Kentucky beating Drake is so sweet. I remember that argument.
"Nebraska plays terrible teams like...Western Kentucky"
Western Kentucky just owned the MVC "giant" Drake.
I sit back and read all the comments about the Nebraska teams from each side. I have to say I really enjoy it a lot when Matt's and other "Jay's" fans thoughts towards the Husker program can be thrown back into their faces. Matt you are just a few years into your career here in Nebraska and still have a long way to come in showing respect to all Nebraska teams. I think it is really funny listening to you comment like you have grown up in Nebraska. Growing up in Nebraska you can talk about the programs a certain way, but when someone like yourself comes in and thinks they understand the "Nebraska" culture it is disrespectful. You have a lot of growing up to do. You need to shake the attitude of the station you work for towards certain programs and share some love for all Nebraska Sports. I think it is great you are a so called "Jays Guy" but don't be such a homer that you refuse to admit you are in the wrong sometimes.
